The First Marine Infantry Division is based in Camp Pendleton California. It is the oldest Marine Division so you know that it has a rich history. This division is known as “The Old Breed” and has led the way in every major conflict that the nation has been involved in. The division is a multi role,expeditionary ground combat force.
The division is a unit of the 1 Marine Expeditionary Force which is known as the Ground Combat Element of the force. Let me break that down to you. The Ground Combat Element is the part of the force that has the responsibility of going in on the ground and kicking some butt. The rest of the force is designed to support the GCE.
The mission of this division is to provide task-organized forces for assault operations and such operations as may be directed. The 1st Marine Division must be able to provide the ground amphibious forcible entry capability to the naval expeditionary force. In other words they must be able to go in on the ground and be successful in the attack. The 1st Marine Division is currently commands four regiments and seperate units some seperate units. The regiments are orgenized to fight the war on the ground and the special units work as directed by the division commander to support the ground attack.
The side panel design that you see here is the insignia that represents this storied division. Notice that on the bottom there are two colors. This is called the color shield design.
