The Coast Guard will recieve a New Commandant
Vice Admiral Robert J Papp Jr. will assume duties as the Commandant of the Coast Guard in May if he is confirmed by the Senate.
When he is confirmed he will assume the oversight of about 42,000 military personnel and 7,000 civilians. He will replace the current commandant who is Admiral Thad W Allen once the process is complete.
He will assume control of one of the most dymanic, modern forces in the world. The technological advances that we have made in this decade puts our Navy and Coast Guard ahead of every armed service in the world.
If you have been following this blog you have seen the reports that we have given of much of the new technology that our Navy and Coast Guard has received. We have documented many of the rescues that our Coast Guard has performed over the last few years and much of the drug interdiction that they have done. We have even done posts on how to create your own Coast Guard ring, and the Coxswain’s ring. We hope to continue to bring you more good news in the future.
Another American Soldier has been Killed by an Afghan Soldier
Regrettably we have to post bad news sometimes and this post is not an exception. We try to find good news to report but the bad and the ugly have to be told also. The unfortunate incident that we are referring to is the death of an American serviceman at the hands of an Afghan national who was being trained by the US.
The Afghan was wounded and arrested during the incident and is incaracerated until an investigation is completed. If you have been following this blog you may remember some of these incidents that we have reported in the past. The problem is that there is so much corruption in the Afghan governmemt. President Obama has taken steps to end the corruption and the United States has revamped the training and selection process for selecting Afghan soldiers. I have said and will say again that I believe that the Afghan army will make the turn but they will need diligent help to do so. I can’t speak for my Enduring Freedom ring customers but I believe that they probably feel the same as I do.
Iran’s Control Over its Populace is Unstable at Best
This news is good news to many but it is not so good for the regime which currently rules in Iran. The news is that the government in Iran is losing control of the population. If they do lose control it will be wonderful news to the Israeli’s and possibly to the United States.
We all know that the present regime is doing all that it can to develop a nuclear delivery system that will threaten Israel and Eastern Europe. I for one believe that if and when they do get all of the pieces into play that they will launch. There is no doubt in my mind. Some of you custom military ring folks feel differently and thats fine. My question is if they do not intend to use nukes why are they trying so hard to get them?
There have been incidents of security forces refusing to use lethal force on angry crowds. There have been many reports of demonstrations and severe crowd unrest. Crowds are angry and don’t mind letting it show. The regime is attempting to maintain control thoough mass arrests but it isn’t working. It seems that the mindset of the masses is not the same as the right wing controlling regime. Let me ask you custom military ring folks out there one question. How much do you think the CIA knows about all of this? Smells a little fishy doesn’t it.
Some of you younger military ring customers may not remember this incident but I do. I was stationed in the 2/18th Field Artillery in Fort Sill Oklahoma at the time. This was the first of this type terrorist attack that I remember and it was a shock to many people.
This blast occured on October 23 1983 and resulted in the deaths of 220 US Marines and 18 of our Navy personnel along with about 79 French soldiers.
The attack was conducted by suicide bombers driving two seperate trucks. The blasts occurred about two minutes apart.
The bombing had the effect of causing the UN peacekeeping force to leave the country. In the aftermath we learned some lessons that we have applied to our outposts in trouble areas which have greatly helped to prevent this type of situation from ever occurring again. http://www.militaryringexpress.com
I had never heard of this torpedo before today but it is not in service at this time. I think it was one of the very first nuclear torpedos which our Navy enployed but don’t take my word on that as gospel.
The MK 45 anti-submarine torpedo (aka ASTOR) was used against high speed, deep diving enemy submarines. It was 227 inches long and weighed in at a whopping 2,400 pounds. The MK45 could be rigged to run straight or it could be wire guided to the target by an operator. It was not capable of homing in on the target. Since it was a nuclear torpedo it had to be command detonated. That is it didn’t detonate on contact. It detonated on a command from the operator who guided it to its intended target.
You custom military ring customers already know this but this torpedo was replaced in 1976 by the Mark 48.
Airborne forces are light infantry who can be dropped into battle because they are designed to be carried into battle with aircraft. The big advantage of Airborne forces is that they can appear quickly almost out of nowhere to wreak havoc on the enemy and behind his lines.
They can be transported in large numbers if necessary which is contingent on the number of aircraft available to transport them.
The biggest disadvantage of using airborne forces is that they can’t carry much equipment so they are not good for sustained operations. The numbers of airborne forces has decreased since the advent of the helicopter. Airmobile forces are transported by helicopters and are used in much the same way as airborne forces. The premier airborne Division in the US Army is the 82nd Airborne Division, and the premier airmobile Division is the 101st. We have the custom military designs available to do both the Paratrooper’s ring and the airmobile ring for any of you out there who has been involved with either of these two types of military units.
Special Operations in Afghanistan are Enjoying Success
In what seems to be another aspect of the troop surge in Afghanistan Special Operation Forces will increase the number of secret missions that they have been conducting.
The main reason for this increase is the recent successes that Navy SEALs and Delta Force operators have been having in conducting these secret missions. Although they don’t give details of what they are doing I am sure that there have been some snatch and grab missions and just raising a whole lot of general cain.
Most of these missions have been in the rural areas of the country where the Taliban have probably felt relatively safe until now. A recent operation netted 150 Taliban killed. The troop surge is starting to click on all cylinders which is wonderful news to me. Our Special Operatons ring customers should have quite a story to tell when they return.
We have all heard this term used before and we have a good idea of what it means but let me give you the book definition.
A warhead is the explosive or destructive material and its detonator which is delivered to a target. There are different types of warheads depending on what kind of damage that you want to do to the target. They are conventional, nuclear, inert, chemical, biological, or kinetic.
Now I know that the majority of you know what these are and what they do but this info is for those custom military ring customers who did not get a lot of time in combat arms branches of service.
The rocket, missile, or torpedo which delivers a conventional warhead delivers a regular high explosive charge. An inert warhead is another word for a dummy round. Inert warheads are used for target practice. They save money because they don’t have a payload. Chemical and biological warheads are especially nasty. They contain either chemicals, or germs that will cause death upon contact. The last one, the kinetic warhead doesn’t contain explosives because it dosesn’t have to. This warhead travels at such a high speed that the force of its contact will destroy whatever it hits. Now my devoted, dedicated military ring customer, have you been educated today?
This operation was the first major offensive in northern Afghanistan which was led by elements of NATO and Afghan government forces. It was more of a response to Taliban threats of increasing their operations in the northern part of the country.
The first part of the operation was directed at Taliban fighters in and around the Badakhshan province while the second part of the operation was directed at the Taliban in the Ghowrmach district.
Both operations were successful in creating enemy casualties with very few friendly casualties. This is another story that a custom military ring can tell. We don’t know how many individual stories are contained in the bigger story, but each and every participant has his own set of circumstances which the world may never know about.
This new command is a big part of the overall plan to get the Afghan Army and police force up to speed so thet they can take control of the country and we can leave. It has already been instituted and has great plans and has seen some success.
A big part of the problem with the army and police force is the widespread corruption which has been their achilles heel. Part of the reason for this is many times Afghan forces are left to fend for themselves in Taliban infested areas with little or no backup. They have to compromise to survive in many of these cases. The Taliban pays its operators more than the Afghan or police so you can see where this can cause a conflict of interest.
About 30% of the troops sent to Afghanistan will be devoted solely to helping to train the army and police force. Members of both of these organizations will be given a hard look to see if they are up to speed. They will also be drug tested. This will be done as part of the effort to clean up the rampant corruption of these two organizations.
If you custom military ring customers have been following posts to this blog you will remember that there have been incidents where Afghan police have shot and wounded American soldiers. So members and applicants will be screened more carefully to insure that there are no ties to the Taliban. I think that this part of the operation is crucial to getting our operation enduring freedom ring customers out of Afghanistan. If it doesn’t go well our efforts will be greatly hampered.
