BS in the Air

jsaThis is one of the many memories that I have of my time in the military. unfortunately I didn’t have it placed on my custom military ring.

When I was in the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea we were in the field one winter on one of our many field training exercises. One night we had a late night command and staff meeting. For those of you who haven’t been affliated with the military this a meeting of what we call the head shed. The events of the past are analyzed and plans are laid for the next days. Well at the end of this staff meeting whoever was speaking gave a word of warning to all commanders of a General Officer who would fly around the area in a helicopter and drop in on units unexpectedly. The comment went something like this, “General Smith will be flying around and he will pop up in your location at anytime.” Well one person who didn’t hear piped up with the, “What did you say?”

The answer, given by another and accepted by all was; “There’s a bunch of bull—t flying around and it just might land anywhere.

Our President Won’t Commit Troops Into Chaos

Bomber Blasts Iran Revolutionary GuardPresident Obama dosen’t want to commit extra troops to Afghanistan until some concessions are made by the incumbent president.

If we commit extra troops they will secure ground and areas under Taliban control. Thats not the problem. The problem is corruption in the Afghan government. Right now Americans don’t know who the enemy is half of the time. There have been times when American soldiers have been fired on by their Afghan escorts during missions.

The recent presidential election was rife with fraud with Hamid Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah both claiming the victory. The official vote shows Karzai winning but there is much evidence of the election being rigged. The problem that this presents to the US is that if there are two people claiming to be president this creates an unstable atmosphere which definitely won’t help us fight the Taliban. According to our estimates Mr Karzai would still win a runoff but he needs to take positive action to legitimize his presidency before we can help him.

I am watching this development very closely and you will hear from the Operation Enduring Freedom ring man to keep you updated.

Maybe All Should Serve

October 28, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

combatI am of the opinion that maybe we should go back to the military draft. Everyone should get an idea of what our combat soldiers have to go through. Maybe it will give some of our citizens a new appreciation of the freedom that they enjoy and take for granted. Maybe there wouldn’t be so much trash talking if all of us had to spend a year in a third world country and live as some of the people there have to. I have been in countries where items that we throw into the garbage such as beer cans and old cardboard are used for something (like patching up your wall) by the people of other countries. I have seen people who were happy to get a half rotten tomato and a stale crust of bread for  breakfast and ate it and enjoyed it.

If you had to spend months in the Arabian desert where temperatures regularily get into the 140′s with no ice you would learn to really appreciate a cold glass of water.

Maybe some of our young generation (and older) would appreciate a 40 hour work week if they had to work for 48 to 72 hours continuously with 2 or 3 hours of sleep during the whole time and little or no food. All of this not knowing when you will see rest or sleep.

A day in the office when the heat or AC is not working will not seem so bad after a week of sleeping on top of the ice while being hungry, funky, tired, cold, smelly, dirty, scared, and sleepy at the same time. Did I mention COLD. These are the memories that my military ring evoke whenever I look at it. For all of the young gansters who want to be hard, live the life of a combat soldier and then I will be impressed. Don’t try to stare me down because I won’t play that game with you. Earn your combat soldiers ring and combat pay then come and talk to me.

One thing that I have learned from the military is that even the most disobedient person becomes a tame puppy when his life is on the line. The fear of dying will make you obey any order given. Maybe some of us should be deprived of the finer things in life before we learn to appreciate it.

sknThe North Korean government is accusing South Korea of making incursions into its maritime territories. According to the North Koreans there have been numerous incursions into its waters by the South Korean Navy but the South Korean government is saying just the opposite. The North Koreans say that if the tresspasses continue there might be an armed skirmish.

Well one is saying one thing and one is saying another so the truth is that somebody wants to get attention. I know that the North Korean government has a serious problem with its economy. It was getting some aid from South Korea but the new South Korean president says opso (no more). I know that it seems that whenever North Kores needs US aid they come up with a manufactured crises to get attention. I would probably pay no attention to this one folks. Take it from the Navy military ring man. Nothing serious.

f-16

One pilot missing in a recent crash of two F-16′s is presumed to be dead. The pilots were part of the 20th Tactical Fighter Wing and were engaged in a training exercise when the crash occured. Both planes collided over the ocean. Capt Nicholas Giglio is still missin while Capt Lee Bryant was able to safely land his F-16 at Charleston AFB.

The Coast Guard has been searching the area but there is very little chance that Capt Giglio was able to eject before the crash occured. In addition there were no distress signal picked up from Capt Giglios equipment which would have began to beacon if he had ejected.

Unfortunately this accident is one of the realities of military life. Every person in the military knows that he or she is at risk during training. Peacetime safety precautions are sometimes excessive but yet we can never prevent accidents from happening  every once in awhile.http://www.militaryringexpress.com

The Purpose of the Submarine

October 27, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

submarineThe official definition of a submarine is a watercraft capable of independant operations below the surface of the ocean. The first use of a submarine in warfare that I know of is the USS Hunley during the Civil War. Since then submarines have been adapted to perform many various functions such as attacking ships, or conversely protecting ships by operating as part of a screening force. They are also used for blocade running, reconaissance, insertion of special operations soldiers, and direct land attack via launching cruise missiles, or nuclear missiles.

I know that in order to become a submariner you have to exhibit psychological charistics which show that you can adapt to being submerged under water in the tight space of a submarine for an extended period of time. Personally I don’t know if I have the cahunas to do it. I have met several submariners in my lifetime and all of the ones that I met were not big fellows. I know that to be a submariner you can’t be over a certain height but I’m not sure of the physical qualifications. We have never sold any of these individuals a Submariner’s ring but we could fix them up with one if we had to.

The Story of Leon Gilbert

October 27, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

1LT 24 Infantry Regiment Badge.pngLeon Aaron Gilbert Jr was a soldier in the 24th Infantry Regiment during the Korean War. ILT Gilbert was court martialed for disobeying a direct order by his commander. His court martial caused a storm of protest against racial discrimmination in the war. It was followed by mass court martials of entire all black units for various reasons.

1LT Gilbert’s wounded commanding officer ordered him to attempt to attack a machine gin position which would have resulted in massive casualties. LT Gilbert’s version of the story is that he was attempting to explain to his commander that to attack the position was tantamount to committing suicide when he was court martialed on the spot. His original sentence was death which was commuted to 20 years by then President Truman. He ended up serving 5 years for battle misconduct.

This is a memory that is not good but it is a memory nonetheless. It probably isn’t one that you would place on a Korean War Ring. There are different versions of this incident and many others during the Korean War. It is good to perserve true events and the military ring is one of the best ways to do so.

There is A Ring for the Military Wife

October 27, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

rings-photos-005.jpgIf you are the female spouse of a soldier, sailor, airman, or marine we have some good news for you. We have had many military wives to ask for a ring for military wives in the past and we have able to fix them up with custom military rings which were very nice.

So the purpose of this post is to inform you military wives that you are not forgotten. I know from firsthand experience that the military wife is not a traditional wife in any sense of the word. She has to be able to take care of the household singlehandly while her husband is deployed for war or training. I also know that military wives are a close knit group and will take care of each other during those hard times.

Even if she is a housewife her job is just as tough as her husbands because all that happens in the military effects her just as much. You deserve to be able to have a military wives ring to tell the story of your service to your country. You are just as much a part of our armed forces as your husband.

Rings For Military Mothers

October 26, 2009 posted by StylinSoldier

rings-photos-039.jpgDeployment times are always special here at Fort Stewart Georgia and at every other military installation in America. so many family members will come into town to see their loved ones off to war. Families try to spend as much time as possible together and want to purchase momentos that remind them of this special time.

Mothers often want to purchase something to identify them as the mother of a soldier. I have had requests for flags, license plates, t shirts, plaques, and rings for military moms. These requests have prompted me to write this post to inform military mothers that we can help you to produce custom military rings which tell the story of your affliation and your sacrifice for this country also. If you have any doubt about how to design your military ring please contact us and benefit from our years of expertise.

The Military Air Traffic Controller

October 26, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

atcThe military air traffic controller has to posses certain qualities which are unique to this job. The main concern is passenger safety. If a controller is incompetent many people could pay the price with their own lives.

The air traffic controller’s job is to maintain safety and order among the aircraft in his or her sector. This is not a physically demanding job but it is one of the most stressful jobs that it is possible to have.

The qualities that an air traffic controller must have are; he or she must be organized and a quick thinker. The controller must be able to quickly solve problems concerning math and space computations. Excellent memory is a must. The controller must be able to quickly and effectively communicate in emergencies, and remain calm under pressure. Air traffic controllers are banned from using some medications for the entire time that he or she is employed. This is one of those jobs that you hear almost nothing about but it is critical.

We would like to recognize all military air traffic controllers with our military side panel design which can be used to create your military or civilian’s Air Traffic Controller’s Ring.
