The Chinese Are Still At It

September 21, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

chineseThe Chinese are continuing to build up the number and quality of their forces. I still think that their intentions are not good. With military technology which they claim is very close to that of the West they might have enough salt to want to try to back up the threats that they are so quick to make.

They could never project their forces all of the way across the Pacific but they can certainly give Asia and Europe a run for the money. The Chinese claim that their jets, tanks, ships, submarines, and missiles are comparable to ours. I don’t think that this is entirely true but they are indeed making long strides.

They have added many nuclear submarines, and destroyers with stealth capability to their Navy.

They are increasing their ability to project force over distance. So once again take this warning from the military ring man. Lets keep a watchful eye on the Chinese.

The sheer size of their Armed Forces is formidible, but when you add the updated technology to their arsenal they are certainly a force to be reckoned with.

The Overseas Service Ribbon

September 21, 2009 posted by OldWarrior
Army Overseas Service Ribbon Army Reserve Overseas Training Ribbon Navy & Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon Air Force Overseas Long Tour Service Ribbon Air Force Overseas Short Tour Service Ribbon

This ribbon is awarded to soldiers in each branch of service who have served a tour of duty outside of the borders of the United States of America. As you can see above each branch of service has their own version of this ribbon with the Air Force having two different versions.

Any person who has served in the Armed Forces for more than one tour of duty probably has been awarded this ribbon.

Many servicemembers will also design their own custom military ring to tell the story of their service both overseas and at home. Some of the designs that we have on hand to show overseas tours of duty are: Vietnam Veterans Rings, Operation Iraqi Freedom Rings, and Operation Enduring Freedom Rings. You can tell the story of any tour that you have been on and you can wear your custom military ring whether you are in or out of uniform.

An Iraqi Civilian Has Been Shot by Marines

September 19, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

fallujahThis incident is kind of funny to me and is about an Iraqi man who was shot in Fallujah Iraq.

I won’t disclose his name out of fairness to him because I’m definitely going to laugh at his behind. Luckily for him he was not grievously injured, even though he was shot three times. Have you heard ths saying, “You brought this on yourself.” Well in this case it is definitely true.

He decided to throw an object at a joint patrol of Iraqis and US Marines. The Marines seeing an object thrown at them thought that it was a grenade and very alertly lit his butt up with gunfire. Throwing an object at armed Marines while they are on a patrol is not a good idea. This is definitely not the best decision that this man has ever made. Now this is one incident that I wouldn’t know how to place on an Operation Iraqi Freedom Ring but maybe someone out there can figure it out. If you would like to do it on your own military ring we would be glad to do so. There is always a way to make youe custom military ring tell the story that you want it to tell.

Unrestricted Submarine Warfare

September 19, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

USS Tunny (SS-282) 0828229.jpgIn unrestricted submarine warfare submarines will indiscriminately attack merchant ships regardless of which country they originate from. The goal of this type of warfare is to deny the supply of war materials to the country that you are at war with. This is a very controversial type of warfare since you attack the merchant vessels of neutral countries.

I think that when a Navy resorts to this it is in a desperate situation. This type of warfare often backfires because it can cause a neutral country to become a foe. You may ask what does this post have to do with creating a custom Navy ring, and the answer is that it has absolutely nothing but I just enjoy bringing tidbits of knowledge about just about everything military.

I don’t know how much of this type of warfare will be used in the future, especially with submarines. Modern technology is so advanced that submarines are not necessarily needed for this type of mission. I guess everything goes in love and war. I can’t justify or condemn this type of warfare but I am not particularily fond of the concept.

Ambushed Marines' Aid Call 'Rejected'Information on this one is sketchy to say the least but there was a reported skirmish on Sep 14th between Afghan soldiers and Afghans who are assigned to guard US troops. There is no information given as to why this skirmish occured and no information is being released other than officials saying that the event is under investigation.

This happened in the Charchino district of Afghanistan. Three of the ANA soldiers were killed and 1 was injured, while 2 guards were killed and 2 others were injured.

I am tempted to comment and to speculate on this one but I hate to start rumors. I wasn’t there and I don’t have any idea of what happened or any inside information. Now after making that clear let me say that I suspect that al Qaeda has some loyalties within the ranks of the Afghan Army maybe in high places. It will be interesting to find out about this one. If you find out anything please let me know by commenting on this post. If my custom military ring man finds out anything he will be sure to let you know.

A Lesbian Soldier is Seeking Asylum in Canada

September 18, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

United States Joint Service Color Guard on parade at Fort MyerI know that this is going to provoke some ill will but I have to tell what I think is the truth. I am writing this post to comment on a news article that I just read about a lesbian soldier who is seeking asylum in Canada.

This is not a post about sexual orientation but about making excuses not to fulfill the service obligation that we agree to when we join the Armed Forces. I am not going to mention the female soldier’s name so as not to provoke any ill will, but to get to the point, I think that she is full of bull.

She says that she asked her chain of command to release her from military service because she was receiving death threats based on her sexual orientation. I am not saying that she didn’t but let me tell you this. Gays and Lesbians have been serving in our military for many years. When I was in the Army we knew who they were but normally they were very good soldiers because they knew that they had to be. No one would complain or really have problems with a person who pulled their weight. Harrassment of gay and lesbian soldiers is rare. I NEVER saw anyone harrassed because of sexual orientation when I was in the service. I am not saying that it never happened though so don’t get me wrong. I’m sure that it has.

The soldier in question didn’t start to have problems until her unit was preparing to go to Afghanistan…Do you see where I’m going with this one? Now suddenly she needs to get out of the Army…right before having to go to war….yeah right. My thing is just don’t lie. Serve your country like you promised to do and when your time is up get out if you don’t like it. This is just the humble opinion of the Army service ring man.

The Coast Guard Has Done it Again

September 17, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

rings-photos-003.jpgHere is just one of many stories of a documented rescue carried out by our Coast Guard from the Custom Coast Guard Ring man. I like to keep you up to date somewhat on the activities of our Armed Forces and Government agencies. We never hear a whole lot about the Coast Guard because rescuing people is routine for them.

They just go about doing their thing quietly and professionally. I am sure that if you ask some of those who have been rescued by the Coast Guard what their thoughts are they wouldn’t be able to say enough good things.

Thie rescue that I am referring to today occurred in Newport Oregon where the Coast Guard rescued 4 surfers who were stranded on the rocks near there. From what I read they Coast Guard utilized a  HH-65C Dolphin heliocopter to rescue the surfers. I have done previous posts about the capabilities of the Dolphin. I want to take this opportunity to thank our Coast Guard for the job that they do. We never hear much about them so we tend to take their service for granted.

Pakistan is Becoming A Taliban Stronghold

September 17, 2009 posted by StylinSoldier

pakistanWe know according to our intelligence that the Taliban’s Executive Council is based in Quetta Pakistan although the Pakistani Government denies this allegation.

NATO has launched attacks into Northwest Pakistan but their offensive actions are limited to that area. In other words they are not free to do all that they need to do to totally eliminate the Taliban threat. Since they have been targeted in the Northwest region Taliban forces simply move out of harms way, into other areas of the country.

The Taliban’s operational commander for Southern Afghanistan is believed to operate his command out of the Chaman region of Pakistan. Our forces have been very successful in capturing al-Qaeda leaders when they have ventured out of Pakistan so they remain in the country. I don’t know a whole lot about the geography of this country but many of our Operation Enduring Freedom Ring customers will put the region or base that they served in on the side of their ring.

Why We Offer Balfour Military Rings

September 16, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

rings-photos-026.jpgThere are several reasons why we offer Balfour military rings to our customers. The first of which is quality. In all of the years that we have offered these rings to the public we have never had a customer that we couldn’t satisfy. There have been a few incidents where customers weren’t initially pleased. (If any retailer ever tells you something different you tell them that the military ring man says that they are lying). We have always managed to satisfy our customers, and some people are hard to please.

Balfour has been in the business of producing custom rings for many years and is one of the most respected names in the industry. The military rings are guaranteed for life and we do honor that guarantee.

We searched high and low before we put our web site together and we used every design that we could possibly find. Sometimes I feel as though we give too many choices but we want you to be able to tell your story just the way that you want to.

When you design your custom military ring you don’t have to pay additional charges for each item. We give you one price and that’s it. The price dosen’t go up just because you need the ring to tell a story for you.

We offer military rings for every branch of service and every conceiveable job title and description. We guarantee you that we will find a way to make your service ring say exactly what you want it to. We will work with you to assure your satisfaction.

The Purpose of the Recoilless Rifle

September 16, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

recioless riflesLet the custom military ring man tell you exactly what a recoilless rifle is in case you don’t know. To be honest with you my understanding was not that good until I did the research to write this post but now I have a little something something to pass on to you.

Recoilless rifles are generally lightweight rifles which fire a pretty heavy shell. They were probably originally designed as antitank weapons so as to help the lightly equipped foot soldier by giving him some destructive power.

The unique thing aout a recoilless rifle is that it used various mechanisms to reduce recoil or kick back. Various techniques are utilized for this but the most common technique is to allow some of the force of the propellant to blow out of the back of the rifle as a sort of equalizer. This may not make the rifle 100% recoilless  but it does reduce recoil significantly.

recoilless rifleOne inherent danger that you will have with a recoilless weapon is called backblast. Backblast is the force which comes out of the back end of the rifle. The shooter must confirm that there is no one standing directly behind him when he pulls the trigger. This can cause death or serious injury to the person standing there. Did you ever wonder why you would see two men manning the bazookas in the old WWII movies? Did you ever wonder why the second person would tap the shooter on the shoulder? Then the shooter would pull the trigger. The reason for this is that the second person would let the shooter know that there was no one in the backblast area  and that it was OK to fire. He tapped him on the shoulder because the battlefield is so noisy he might not hear a verbal command.

These type weapons are not used by the US military (except the Marine Corps has a few) so unfortunately it is not available for use as a service ring design. There are a few being used by the US Park Service. They are used to fire into areas of heavy snow for avalanche control.
