Who In the World Was Frank Sutton?

April 30, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

frank suttonThis face may not be familiar to some of you young bucks. I bet that many of you don’t even know who this man is. Frank Spencer Sutton was born in Clarksville TN on Oct 23 1923.  He was also known as Sergeant Vincent Carter who played the role of an overworked Marine DI who had the unfortunate job of trying to make a Marine out of Jim Neighbors “Gomer Plye.”

This was a hilarious comedy that I enjoyed watching as a child. I think that it might have helped recruitment for the Marine Corps. It certainly was popular among people of that day. The one thing that surprised me when I did the research for this post was that Mr. Sutton was never enlisted in the Marine Corps. He did enlist in the Army and served in many military campaigns during WWII.

Mr. Sutton played many minor roles during his acting career, but he is well known for his role as Sgt Carter. Mr Sutton died at the age of 50 in 1974 of a sudden heart attack.

I still watch reruns of this old program from time to time and still enjoy them. I was talking to some young soldiers today and they had never heard of the program or Frank Sutton. This brings me to this point. A custom military ring whether it is an Army ring or a Marine Corps ring will certainly help you to hold on to old memories.

Whats Up Swabbie

April 30, 2009 posted by admin

att12974.jpgThis is a little known term commonly used to refer to Sailors. The word swab is known as a nautical term which means to mop, so the term “swabbie” will commonly refer to a lower ranking Navy enlistee who would have the duty of “swabbing” or mopping the deck of a ship.

I bet that you didn’t know that swab is an Army term also. Field Artillerymen have to swab the bore of the cannon after each round is fired to clean up the powder and cloth residue left from the powder bags. The swab resembles a giant Q tip. Swabbing the bore of the cannon is necessary for proper operation of the artillery piece and can prevent some pretty serious problems which could cause injury or death.

Since we are talking about things that need to be cleaned let me tell you this story. I have an assortment of military rings that people have ordered over the years that I have never cleaned. They still look so good that I use them to show to customers when they are interested in designing their own custom military ring.

rings-photos-020.jpgMany Air Force personnel like to use Air Force Retiree rings to tell the story of their time in the service of this country. The Air Force is the most diversified branch of the military and the career paths that Air Force personnel can take are numerous. Regardless of where you served your country when you were in the Air Force or in what capacity you served in, we can use the retirement ring to help you to tell the story of your service.

You can use your ring to tell the story of the job title that you held, where you served, the type of aircraft that you served on, etc. If your specialty was weapons systems you can use the military service ring to show which weapons system that you worked with.

If you served in more than one branch of the military you can use your military ring to show both branches. I had a customer yesterday who had served in the Army and Marine Corps who displayed both branches on his service ring. There is almost no limit to what you can use your custom military ring to do. You are only limited by your own imagination.

The Korean War Veterans Memorial

korean war memorialThe Korean War Veterans Memorial is located in Potomic Park, in Washington DC. The memorial was dedicated on July 27th 1995. It contains three major sections. The first section contains 19 stainless steel statues which represent each branch of the United States Armed Forces. The statues are placed in an order which represents soldiers on patrol.

The United Nations Wall is another section of the memorial. This wall lists each of the 22 member nations of the UN who supported the war effort.

The third part of the memorial is the pool of rembrance which is a 30 foot granite lined  pool dedicated to all of the casualties of the war.

I really like the spirit of the memorial and its design. I get a glimpse of the artists concept when I consider the way that he designed this memorial. If you have never been to war it is hard to understand the sacrifice of our veterans and the horrors and emotions of war. My father was a Navy Veteran of the Korean War who served his country proudly and I am proud of him. We can use many techniques to create a memorial of past events and a custom military ring is only one of many ways to memoralize the actions of our loved ones who have served our great country.

The Puerto Rican Flag

Variant flag of Puerto RicoThis flag is the flag design that we offer for all styles of the military rings that we offer. This is the official flag of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. This flag was actually not used until 1952 because until that time it was outlawed. The blue background was originally light blue but was changed to the same blue as the United States flag before it was unveiled.

This flag was taken aboard the space shuttle Discovery in 2009. There are many flags used in Puerto Rico which represent different municipalities and political parties of the country but we offer the official flag which represents the commonwealth. You can use this flag on any ring design as a side panel or as a laser vue design. We have found this to be a very popular design over the years. We have done many rings with this design for our customers in all branches of service and will be glad to help you when you design your own custom military ring.

Many Kuwatis lost their lives in the invasion and subsequent 7 month occupation of their country. Liberation Day is celebrated by many public and private gatherings and celebrations.

The Map of Kuwait is avaliable as a side panel design if you want to design a custom Kuwati Liberation ring. This design can be used by anyone who has ever served in Kuwait or in support of operations which took place in that country. The Field Artillery Soldier

April 28, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

artilleryThe Field Artillery Soldier is highly trained in this highly technical branch of service. Field Artillery basic and advanced training is primarily conducted in The US Army Field Artillery School located at Fort Sill Oklahoma. Areas of artillery training include cannon artillery, survey, fire direction, targeting, and forward observation. Each area of this training has its unique challenges.

During my time as an artilleryman the artillery school also taught tactics, nuclear targeting and operations, and missile courses along with aerial observation.

The most physically demanding job is the job of cannoneer. The cannoneer has to lift, transport, and load artillery projectiles onto the howitzer and into ammunition trucks.

Speed is always stressed in artillery training because whoever needs artillery needs it as quickly as possible and is probably in some kind of trouble. Safety is critical because the field artilleryman is dealing with high explosive fuses, powder, and projectiles. Accuracy is a major factor because the smallest mistake will cause a huge error on the receiving end of the artillery fire. Artillery shells can travel for miles so small discrepancies are greatly magnified over distance. Some of the factors that must be accounted for when an artillery shell is fired are; air density, wind speed and direction, the rotation of the earth, air temperature, powder temperature, and temperature of the gun tube.

There are many options for the field artilleryman who wants to design a custom field artillery ring. We can’t give you every available option in this short post, but the combinations are numerous.

rings-photos-012.jpgMy answer to you is yes you should. There are many advantages to using platinum in jewelry making. Let me educate you.

The name platinum comes from the Spanish term platina del Pinto, which is translated “little silver of the Pinto River.” Platinum excels as a jeweller’s metal because it is dense, malleable, and extremely resistant to corrosion. Platinum is insoluable in hydrochloric and nitric acid, and is extremely resistant to the effects of heat and chemical activity. Platinum is a very valuable and sought after commodity because of these qualities and is more valuable than gold.

Now to get to the point. These are the reasons than platinum is used in the silver select custom military ring. Since platinum is identical to sterling silver in appearance it is the best choice as a metal to compliment this ring and to make it more durable. It is the logical choice to enhance the intrinsic value of the silver select ring. We offer this ring in an effort to provide you with a better product. We want your military ring to be an item that you can enjoy for many, many, years.

Military Retirement Rings

April 24, 2009 posted by admin

rings-photos-017.jpgMilitary retirement is a milestone that needs to be recognized and honored. If you have served 20 years in the armed forces whether you served in the Army, Navy, Air Force,  Marine Corps, Coast Guard or any government agency you have certainly accomplished a major feat. It takes a certain type of person to do 20 years of military service.

I personally congradulate you on this accomplishment.  We have done many military retirement rings for service members that I can’t keep count, and we have done each and every one with pride. We want you to consider the things that most retired servicemembers like to do.

Most like to put the word “retired” somewhere on thier ring whether it be around the stone or above a side panel design. Many of our customers will put their service years on one or both sides of the ring above the side panel.

We offer our advice to you free of charge and we will be glad to help you if you want to design a retirement ring for yourself or one of your loved ones.

What Does The Term Jarhead Mean?

April 24, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

quanticoYou may have heard this slang term used and never knew what it meant. Well grasshopper let me tell you. This is the term used to identify members of the United States Marine Corps. I don’t know where the term originated but it probably refers to the way that marine recruits look when they  receive that first hair cut in basic training. I think that this is partly done to the recruit for its shock value, but it also gives a distinctive look and is a way of giving the recruit a new identity.

Military service is all about distinction. One reason that the comforts of home are taken away from recruits is to cause them to identify with the corps, and to begin to instill the prode of Marine Corps affliation in the new recruits. All of the branches of our armed services do this in some form or another.

Even though I left the military about 16 years ago I still identify very easily with servicemembers of today. Whenever I meet a servicemember there is an unspoken bond between us that nothing can replace. The purpose of the military service ring is to help us to display our military accomplishments.
