Just Having Fun

January 30, 2009 posted by admin

att12989.jpgThis picture was taken during Operation Iraqi Freedom. It is a good thing that this soldier can keep his sense of humor and have some fun. It looks like the dog is having a good time also.

We all have special memories of our time in service. I can surely tell of many fond memories of my time in service although none of them were quite like this one. There are some others that are real doozies though. I used my Army Service ring to tell the main themes and the million other memories just seem to come into play sometimes.

A True Story

January 30, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

I know that you all have heard your share of lies on this site. Not my lies but lies that I have been told. Anyway this is a funny story that really happened. I was there so this is the true first hand account.

During a Field Exercise a young lieutenant was talking to the 1st Sergeantrings-photos-044.jpg when a private drove up and parked his jeep. The private began to walk away and the officer yelled out. “Hey soldier you need to relocate that vehicle!” The private looked at him with a what did you say look. When the 1st Sergeant saw this he yelled to the private. “Move that @#%&8= jeep. ” The private immediately ran back to the jeep, jumped in and drove it away. The 1st Sergeant then looked at the officer and said, “He understood me better sir.”

What do you think. Did this really happen or is the old man pulling your leg? This was a good story and just about the only story that I couldn’t completely get on my military service ring.

Sgt Bryson’s Big Vietnam Lie

January 29, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

This lie is a pretty good one but I don’t think that it tops Sgt Spivey’s great Vietnam lie. SFC Bryson is a Vietimage010.jpgnam Veteran who I had the pleasure of working with for a while when I was in the Army. I know that you want to hear the lie so here it goes.

Pvt Bryson (at that time) was an infantry soldier during the Vietnam War. This young soldier (says) that he was with his unit which was about to be overrun with NVA regulars during the TET offensive. Pvt Bryson was the M60 machine gunner for his platoon. He declares that the M60 can do a whole lot more than the Army says that it can (keep this in consideration but don’t bet your life on it).  Pvt Bryson says that he was so scared that he continuously fired the machine gun (no bursts) until the battle was over. The amazing thing about this piece of equipment is that the barrel turned white hot and you could see the bullets going thru it (according to Bryson).

The reason that I don’t believe this one is this; If you are so scared that your finger freezes on the trigger when do you find time to check out the bullets and marvel at the fact that you can see them through the barrel. This is one lie that you can’t even put on a military ring.

Sgt Spivey’s Big Vietnam Lie

January 29, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

image009.jpgI  may be wrong but I believe this is just about the biggest lie that I have ever been told. I’ve heard some doozies and I’m sure that you have too. What makes this lie so great is that the storyteller will not back down one inch. He declares that this really happened!!

This lie is so good that I gave it a name!!! I call it Sgt Spivey’s Big Vietnam lie. This is how it goes: Sgt Spivey is a Vietnam veteran who was drafted out of the ghettos of Chicago to fight in the Vietnam War. Pvt Spivey (at that time) was a young infantry soldier on patrol with the rest of his squad. The patrol halted during the wee hours of the morning and the young private was put on guard duty. Since this whole war thing was new to him and had him kind of nervous he decided to roll a “cigarette” to help him calm his nerves. He had to put his rifle down to roll the “cigarette” and after he started to smoke he was enjoying the nicotine so much that he pretty much forgot to pick the rifle back up.

Let me interject something at this point to help you get a better understanding of the feel of this tall tale. Do you remember the commercial where a young man was eating potato chips when all of a sudden the meanest ugliest space alien that you can imagine appeared in front of him. Well this goes something like that. You may remember that the young man began to feed chips to the monster and all was well until the chips ran out. Thats when they began to have big problems. O.K. now back to the story.

All of a sudden a VC appeared out of the jungle with a rifle in his hands. Since Pvt. Spivey didn’t have his in hand his pucker factor rose about 1000%. While the Pvt was standing there speechless the VC reached over and took the “cigarette” from his hand and took a toke, oops,I meant a puff. They stood there and smoked the “cigarette” and engaged in small talk. When the “cigarette was gone the VC disappeared back into the jungle never to be seen again.

I have confronted Spivey many times about this story but he declares that it really happened. I guess anything is possible but this  is just too big for me to swallow. That is too big of a lie even for  for him to put on his Vietnam Veterans Ring.

Another Fine Example of Military Teamwork

January 23, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

image003.jpgTeamwork was one of the most valuable lessons that the military taught me. When you are put in tough situations with people you learn that you have to bond to overcome. You capitalize on their strengths and they capitalize on yours. You learn to protect their weaknesses and they learn how to protect yours. You work together to get the job done.

I formed some bonds that will never be broken and although I may never see these people again in my life we are brothers. If I ever do see them again what’s theirs is mine and what’s mine is theirs. Every time that I look at my military service ring I am reminded of my time in the service of my country and I think back on some of the friendships formed along the way and I smile.

Lets Remember The B-29 Bomber

January 21, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

B-29The B-29 Superfortress was the name given to the four engine propeller driven heavy Air Force bomber during WWII and The Korean Conflict. This plane was well ahead of its time when it went into service and was the airplane used to drop the first atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The first Kamikazee pilots were the Japanese pilots who resorted to ramming their aircraft into the B-29 in order to bring them down. (I’ll bet you didn’t know that did you)?

The B-29 has carved its place in history and is now nothing more than a distant memory for some. Do you have distant memories of your time spent in military service? If so you can build your custom Air Force ring to commemorate your distant memories. Come and se what we can offer you at http://www.militaryringexpress.com

Who in The World is Atomic Annie?

January 21, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

atomic annieFor those of you who don’t know “Atomic Annie was the name given to the first nuclear capable US Army Field Artillery cannon. This cannon fired the first and only round ever fired by a Field Artillery Cannon in May 1953. Now my question to all of you out there is this; Why has the Army fired only one nuclear Artillery shell in all these years? You don’t have to answer out loud, just think about it.

It seems to me that if an Artillery crew has to ever fire a nuclear round in combat a whole lot of people are in deep kim chee. Especially the crew. This howitzer was soon phased out because the Army figured out how to use the cannons already in inventory to fire nukes.

Are you or have you ever been a Redleg? If so you can design your custom Field Artillery ring with us. We are more than capable to help you to get the job done.

The US Navy SEAL’s

January 20, 2009 posted by OldWarrior

US Navy SEAL'sThe United States Navy Sea, Air and Land Forces are the Special Operations Forces of the United States Navy. SEAL’s have many, many diverse capabilities.

The modern day SEAL’s started out as Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT’s) in June 1943. The graduation rate for SEAL’s is only 20-30% due to the intense physical and mental nature of SEAL training. Each active SEAL team consists of a Staff Headquarters element and 3 forty man Troops.

I can tell you from experience that SEAL’s are bad boys. I was an Army Artilleryman but I had the pleasure of going through jump school with a few of them. Each morning one of them would purposely fail inspection to be sent to the sawdust pit for extra P.T.

Every break they would line up for additional P.T. so believe me these boys are in shape. These soldiers are necessary to our country and our national defense. No one truly knows the sacrifices that have been made by these soldiers in the defense of our country and our way of life. Check out the options that we have to offer for your US Navy Seal Ring.
