You can see why the military ring customers refer to this rank as a three star. The average soldier rarely if ever will see a three star General because they are not found at division level.
I found out some interesting things that I didn’t know about this rank as I began to do the research for this article. First of all there is a finite number of General Officers which can be appointed in any branch of service at any one time.
This rank is common to the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps. It is dependent on position and is a three year appointment. In other words the 3 star can only serve for three years. After that time he has to vacate the position to allow some other two star to move up. He or she must be confirmed by the Senate before serving in the office. I did not know that the rank was temporary until now although under certain circumstances it can be extended. I have never personally known any 3 star Generals although I have seen plenty of 2 star Generals.
