I know that this is going to provoke some ill will but I have to tell what I think is the truth. I am writing this post to comment on a news article that I just read about a lesbian soldier who is seeking asylum in Canada.
This is not a post about sexual orientation but about making excuses not to fulfill the service obligation that we agree to when we join the Armed Forces. I am not going to mention the female soldier’s name so as not to provoke any ill will, but to get to the point, I think that she is full of bull.
She says that she asked her chain of command to release her from military service because she was receiving death threats based on her sexual orientation. I am not saying that she didn’t but let me tell you this. Gays and Lesbians have been serving in our military for many years. When I was in the Army we knew who they were but normally they were very good soldiers because they knew that they had to be. No one would complain or really have problems with a person who pulled their weight. Harrassment of gay and lesbian soldiers is rare. I NEVER saw anyone harrassed because of sexual orientation when I was in the service. I am not saying that it never happened though so don’t get me wrong. I’m sure that it has.
The soldier in question didn’t start to have problems until her unit was preparing to go to Afghanistan…Do you see where I’m going with this one? Now suddenly she needs to get out of the Army…right before having to go to war….yeah right. My thing is just don’t lie. Serve your country like you promised to do and when your time is up get out if you don’t like it. This is just the humble opinion of the Army service ring man.
