I don’t know how many of you younger military ring customers are aware of the punji stake but I am sure that every one of you Vietnam ring customers are acquainted with them. The reason I say this is because that is where they were used.
The punji stake was a sharpened piece of wood or some other material placed in a shallow pit with the spiked end pointed up. The stick was sometimes covered with some type of poison or even human excrement so that when you stepped on it it would penetrate and cause a nasty infection or painful poisoning.
The stick was put in the pit which was then covered with debris so that you wouldn’t see it. The whole purpose was to wound rather than kill because when a combatant is wounded it takes several others to care for him which effectively takes them out of the action. As far as I know the Vietnam War was the only place where this particular improvised weapon was used. If I am wrong will one of you custom military ring customers let me know?
This is the term that I learned in the military for using ropes and other military hardware to descend from heights which are too steep to descend by foot. The German derivitave of this word is “abseiling.”
Rappelling was introduced to the world by Jean Esteril Charlet who was a mountain guide. The military application of rappelling is normally with light infantry units, spec ops units, and air assault units.
This is typically a technique that you would see a unit such as the 10th Mountain Division use frequently.
There are several different types of rappelling techniques which may be used depending on the circumstances that the descender finds himself in.
The technique that we are most familiar with is the regular feet first rappell where the descender leans back over the edge of the cliff and allows his upper body to descend until he begins to fall. At that time he or she will take two or three small steps to maintain balance. Ideally the descender will keep his body at a 90 degree angle and descend using either small steps or jumps. This is what you see pictured above.
The Australian rappell is used when the descender needs to look down as he or she descends. This position is good if he needs to return fire or just needs to know whats happening on the ground below.
The final military application that I will talk about here is the technique that Special Operations, and Airmobile ring customers use to descend from helicopters. The technique which was used more when I was in the military was to exit in the same position as the regular rappell, but now I think fast roping is used more. With fast roping the operator simply grabs the rope and slides down. This is convenient because when he gets to the ground he doesn’t have toremove a harness or any other equipment. He simply releases the rope and continues the mission. Now I don’t know that much about this last one because I’ve never done it, but if any of you custom military ring customers can explain it better please do so.
The US military first used the concept of the Firebase to support its operations during the Vietnam War. The thick jungles of Vietnam restricted movement of most heavy equipment so the firebase had to be utilized.
Essentially the firebase was an artillery emplacement which was carved out of the jungle. Most times equipment and supplies had to be brought in by helicopter. The firebase was placed in an area where it could best support operations of the infantry which was assigned control of the area. The artillery units had to be prepared to turn the howitzers around to provide 360 degree support to the area. The firebase had to be well fortified to protect itself from enemy artillery and mortars, and from being overrun by infantry.
Tactics used by custom military ring customers these days are very different because tactics have to be adapted to the time that you are serving in.
The point man is the soldier, special operator, or marine who leads his element during a patrol operation or a movement to contact. He is the first to make contact with the enemy and has the most dangerous job in his element.
This is a position which should be rotated between team members because of its stressful nature. In case of enemy contact the point man will almost certainly be lost because he is the first one in. In many cases a smart enemy will allow the point man to pass so that he can more effectively engage the remainder of the group.
Since the point mam will be the first to make contact with the enemy all eyes are on him as he moves forward. The point man will communicate with the rest of his unit with hand signals although they can tell by his body language when there is trouble ahead. My Infantry and Special Operations ring customers will be most familiar with this term.
Step 12 to Creating Your Custom Military Ring
The next step in creating your custom military ring is to select your preferred laser vur design. We will probably have to go in and make some changes in our site on this one but the preferred laser vue is the design that you would like to have on your ring.
The reason that this prompt appears is that we have pages of laser vue designs listed on the site that we don’t necessarily list on the order page by name. We can’t list them all because there are hundreds of them. We have set those that we can’t list at the top of the page. You click on the preferred laser vue line and it will open up to show you all of the extra designs.
You can click through them and choose whichever one that you like. Once you do so just type in the name of the design in the perferred laser vue space.
If you get to the point where you get stuck just give us a call at 912-877-4734. We will be more than happy to help you design your custom military ring.
In unconventional warfare you are not necessarily trying to win by killing off all of your enemy or destroying all of his equipment. This can be classified as a type of warfare by attrition or by breaking you opponents will to fight or to win.
Once again let me go back to our military ring customers who are currently serving in Iraq and afghanistan. This is the type of warfare that the Taliban and al-Qaeda. they don’t have the military size or resources to slug it out with us so they are doing all that they can do to break the will of the American population. They do things which they think will take all of the starch out of us and make us have to have to give up the battle.
This is the type of warfare that defeated the Russians when they invaded Afghanistan. after they had fought for years and not made any headway the Russians saw that the attempt was not worth the cost that it would have to pay to have an assurance of victory.
I’m sure that our Army and Marine Corps ring customers have studied that conflict and come up with tactics which would preclude the same thing from happening to us.
I’m sure that you all have heard of this term, and you probably know what it means, but I would just like to do this post in honor of our KIA’s. I know that some of my military ring customers are in this category because we have dealt with so many different customers, especially those who purchased US Army rings from us.
The definition of a KIA (killed in action) is a soldier who is killed as the result of hostile action whether it was a firefight or some other means of death as long as it was caused by hostile enemy action.
This is a term that we don’t like to hear because it is the ultimate sacrifice that a young man or woman can give. Any time that you hear the term KIA that means that a YOUNG person has just given up the rest of their natural life on this earth for your freedom. We need to appreciate what our young servicemen give to pay for the price of our freedom.
A Former POW Has His Wedding Ring Returned
This is a story that has a rough start but a happy ending. I had to use it when I saw it because it fits so well with this blog.
The story begins in the Vietnam War in 1965. I wanted to write about it because it expresses the sentiment that a ring may elicit. This can be any kind of ring to include a wedding ring, but also a military ring fits in this category.
Air Force Capt James Hivner and his co-pilot were shot down over North Vietnam while on a bombing run in 1965. They were captured minutes after they ejected from their F-4 Phantom and subsequently stripped of all possessions and clothing. Gapt Hivner kept his wedding ring inside a pocket along with his dog tags on a small chain. He remained a prisoner for 7and1/2 years never seeing his ring again. He eventually purchased another like the first one which he never wore much but kept for sentimental value.
This all came to an end this October when his original ring was returned to him by retired Navy commander Rick Talley. It seems that Talley’s former son in law was working in Vietnam when he was approached by a retired NVA soldier. It seems that the soldier found it in his desk and wanted to get it back to its owner. Mr. Talley knew who the owner was because of the attached identification tag.
This story is so good because it shows the sentiment that a military ring or any other ring can have. We always stress to our customers to make their ring speak to them because your custom military ring can be used to tell so much. This is a fabulous story but it is nothing compared to the story that a custom military ring can tell.
The term “Guerilla Warfare is derived from a Spanish term which means “little war.” In guerilla warfare a small outnumbered, and ill equipped group of people have to use irregular tactics to fight a larger military force.
Guerillas must be as unconventional as possible because they can not defeat their enemy in a head to head conflict. Sometimes when you watch a football game on TV you will see a weaker team use trick plays and deception to try to score because they know that they are not strong enough to win otherwise.
The biggest weakness that a large army has is their predictability. They must operate all things according to a rigid protocol in order for anything to work. The guerilla force will take advantage of this if they know what they are doing. They can plan their actions on the scripted response that the enemy will make to any attack or action against it. This is the kind of warfare that our Vietnam Veteran ring customers faced in the Vietnam war. It required us to come up with different tactics to try to combat guerilla warfare. This was frustrating to our soldiers because the hit and run tactics of the guerillas caused casualties that we couldn’t reciprocate.
